16 March 2022 – EAB Group Plc, Future Food Fund, Group La Française, Planet A and Société Générale Assurances are the 5 new signatories of the Finance for Biodiversity Pledge. The celebration of the new signatories was held during the side-event ‘Aligning financial flows to generate more resources for nature’ organised during the pre-COP15 meeting of the Convention of Biological Diversity in Geneva on 16 March 13.00-15.00 CET.
Milestones: more assets and one new country
With the new signatory financial institutions, the Finance for Biodiversity Pledge reaches a milestone by representing in total over €13 trillion in assets in total by the 89 signatories. We also have representation of a signatory from a new country, Finland.
Pre-COP15 meeting in Geneva
The Open-Ended Working Group on the Post-2020 Biodiversity Framework is tasked with advancing preparations for the development of the post-2020 global biodiversity framework. This process is expected to lead to the adoption of a post-2020 global biodiversity framework during the second phase of the UN Biodiversity Conference in August-September 2022. The OEWG3 meeting is held in a physical setting from 13 to 29 March 2022 in Geneva, Switzerland.
Finance for Biodiversity Pledge
The Finance for Biodiversity Pledge is a commitment of financial institutions to protect and restore biodiversity through their finance activities and investments. The Pledge consists of 5 steps financial institutions commit to take:
- Collaborating and sharing knowledge
- Engaging with companies
- Assessing impact
- Setting targets
- Reporting publicly on the above before 2025
As financial institutions, they emphasize the need to protect biodiversity and to reverse nature loss in this decade, ahead of the Conference of the Parties (COP 15) to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) in 2022.
Working groups
Financial institutions that signed the Finance for Biodiversity Pledge can become members to join the working groups of the Finance for Biodiversity Foundation. With this new round of signatories, the total number of members increased from 42 to 45. The members are sharing knowledge and collaborate on topics such as impact assessment, engaging with companies and public policy advocacy. Additional working groups on positive impact and target setting will follow later this next year.
New signatory round in June 2022
There will be another round of celebrating new signatories in June 2022. Financial institutions can already sign up via our registration page here.
