The 2023 Annual Report highlights a year of growth, action, and collaboration in advancing biodiversity integration within the financial sector. Key developments include:
Reflecting on 2023, the adoption of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (GBF) began to translate into actionable policies. Global platforms like the G7 and G20 recognised the critical role of finance in halting biodiversity loss, with rising innovation in sustainable finance products such as green bonds.
Community Growth
- We welcomed 37 new Pledge signatories, bringing the total to 162 financial institutions.
- Expanded to 74 active members, fostering peer learning, collaboration, and shared action.
Key Achievements
- Published pivotal resources:
- Biodiversity-Climate Nexus paper
- Nature Target Setting Framework for Asset Managers & Asset Owners
- Launched a Positive Impact Working Group, enhancing focus on nature-positive financial flows.
- Hosted multiple events, including the “We Need to Talk About Biodiversity” webinar series.
Governance & Leadership
The Foundation strengthened its structure, expanding the secretariat and fostering collaborative leadership across five working groups (Engagement with Companies, Impact assessment, Public Policy advocacy, Target setting and Positive Impact).
Looking Ahead
In 2024, the Foundation will prioritise:
- Supporting members in achieving GBF-aligned biodiversity targets
- Launching a Biodiversity Data Platform
- Facilitating progress reporting and peer learning ahead of the 2025 Pledge disclosure deadline
- Amplifying voices at COP16 in Colombia to accelerate biodiversity action.
The Finance for Biodiversity Foundation remains dedicated to driving finance towards nature conservation and restoration, building a resilient and nature-positive future.
