FfB Foundation Concludes 2024 with 194 Pledge Signatories on Second Anniversary of Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework

19 December – The Finance for Biodiversity (FfB) Foundation celebrated a new milestone, reaching a total of 194 Pledge signatories. These financial institutions, from 29 countries, represent a total of €23 trillion in combined assets and assets under management. The final four new signatory financial institutions were celebrated on the second anniversary of the adoption of the Kunming Montreal Biodiversity Framework.

The newly committed signatories of the Finance for Biodiversity Pledge are AIP Management P/S, B & Capital, Coöperatie Univé U.A. and G.E.N.F. Grundstücksgesellschaft mbH. From this group, AIP Management P/S also joined as a fully-fledged member of the FfB community, bringing it to 82 members in total.

Commitment to Biodiversity

Achieving 194 signatories to the Finance for Biodiversity Pledge by the end of 2024, within just a few years since its inception, reflects the finance sector’s rapidly growing awareness of the critical need to address biodiversity loss and ecosystem protection with urgency and collective action. It also signals a deeper understanding of the risks posed by biodiversity loss.

Additionally, the diversity of institutions, ranging from asset managers and asset owners to banks and insurers, showcases a broad range of financial actors aligning finance activities and investments with biodiversity goals. This collective action highlights the sector’s dedication to driving impactful change in biodiversity finance.

Two years after the adoption of the Kunming Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework

The second anniversary of the adoption of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (GBF) follows the conclusion of the sixteenth Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD COP16), held in October 2024 in Cali, Colombia. As an official observer of the CBD since 2021, the Finance for Biodiversity (FfB) Foundation actively participated in COP16, engaging in negotiations and co-organising the Finance and Biodiversity Pavilion to accelerate global action on sustainable finance.

The GBF, adopted during COP15 in December 2022 after a four-year consultation and negotiation process, sets out four goals and 23 targets aimed at halting and reversing biodiversity loss by 2030, with a vision of living in harmony with nature by 2050. In light of the outcomes of COP16 and the ongoing global efforts to implement the GBF, joining the FfB Pledge as a signatory has become even more pertinent. Financial institutions are increasingly recognising the critical importance and urgency of aligning financial flows with biodiversity goals, a commitment that is integral to the FfB Pledge.

By becoming a signatory, financial institutions contribute to global biodiversity targets and position themselves as leaders in sustainable finance, aligning with international frameworks and benefiting from the collaborative network and resources provided by the FfB Foundation.
